What’s in a mattress?

In my mid 20’s I vividly remember being so excited about going to the mall to get my new king size mattress set, as they were half price. It was so comfortable, and I could hardly wait to get it back to my apartment! I didn’t care that I didn’t have a bed frame either…the metal frame seemed fine to me!

Do you know what your mattress is made out of? Here is some information about what your baby is sleeping on at night: http://www.healthychild.com/toxic-sleep/five-problems-with-baby-mattresses-toxic-chemicals/. Doesn’t that seem crazy? All of those chemicals? How can that be legal? When I started learning more about antimony, it was then that we got our first organic baby mattress for our then six month old daughter. Antimony is a flame retardant, and a nasty chemical. Here is information about the link between SIDS and the chemicals found in mattresses: http://www.stopsidsnow.com/. The scary truth is that people have no idea what they are being exposed to 8-10 hours per night!

These toxic chemicals are also being linked to cancer and thyroid disease. Here is more information about illnesses related to the chemicals found in traditional mattresses: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/11/11/is-your-mattress-making-you-sick.aspx. And here is the list of the toxic chemicals found in mattresses: http://www.ehow.com/list_5818265_list-mattress-chemicals.html.

The memory foam mattresses are even worse than standard mattresses as they contain the largest amount of chemicals. Here is a link to more great information: http://www.squidoo.com/chemicallysensitivepeople.

Wow! Don’t you think it might be time for a healthier alternative? If you don't think you can afford an organic mattress, check out the Simply Affordable line at www.anaturalhome.com.

  1. Thanks for posting about the dangers of mattresses that most people are not aware of. All of the chemicals in mattresses are dangerous both to the environment and to your own health. No parent wants to subject their baby to that, which is why they should consider an Organic Baby Mattress instead.
